Oscar nominations have been announced. It’s always interesting to reflect on the themes and messages of what a select few see as the best Hollywood has to offer.

In the wake of the Oscar nominations being announced, conservative film critic Michael Medved wrote an editorial for CNN on why this might be year the ceremony reverses the downward spiral in its ratings. The reason? This is the first time in a long time that a good chunk of the best-picture nominees aren’t dark and depressing, and people will tune in to cheer on flicks with a more cheery disposition (think Up, for example). In other words, he thinks people are getting awfully tired of being depressed—and awfully tired of being told why they need to be depressed if they aren’t.
