The Acadia, a Navy ship retired from service in 1994 after 13 years worth of trips around the world, now rests in Pearl Harbor. Officials had planned to use the old ship for scrap metal or as a location for special military training. Local community groups in Hawaii have their own set of plans. They want to turn the Acadia into a homeless shelter.

Homelessness in Hawaii has increased 28 percent since last year. With some $2 million, the 642-foot Acadia can be transformed into a floating refuge for the poor, complete with air conditioning and furnished bedrooms.

One minister pushing for the acquisition says, "Hawaii has to do something different and out of the box. And this is out of the box."

It's out of the box for the military, too. They've been approached about turning warships into museums, but never ministry centers.
