The end of the semester is still a few months away, but I’m already making plans for a “Back to School” series. I’ve never done anything like this before, but as I was firming up my preaching calendar for the rest of the year, it occurred to me that this approach might work.
In our community, most families with school children finish their summer vacations by mid-August. That’s when practices start for football, cheerleading, band, and other activities. With weekend attendance back to ‘normal’ (if there is such a thing!), it’s a prime time for a three-week series before I begin a new fall series the weekend after Labor Day.
My plan for this August is to preach three sermons from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. I’ll focus on three critical issues for students and their parents as everyone gets read to go back to school. My texts and topics are:
- Matthew 5:27-30 (sex)
- Matthew 5:33-37 (truth)
- Matthew 5:43-48 (hatred)
These texts point out critical areas in which students (and everyone else!) need to reflect the righteousness of Christ. Of course, the possibilities for a “Back to School” series are endless. As believers head back to school, they need to think through how the gospel will work its way out in their lives. This may lead a preacher to focus on aspects of God’s character or on handling temptation or on Jesus’ mission. Whatever you plan to preach on at the end of the summer, the “Back to School” angle just might work!
