Every Friday, the Preaching Today Blog takes a look at the week that was - what people are watching, reading, listening to, and learning about?
Top Five Movies
1. High School Musical 3: Senior Year (G)
2. Zack and Miri Make a Porno (R)
3. Saw V (R)
4. The Changeling (R)
5. The Haunting of Molly Hartley (PG-13)
Notables: High School Musical 3 takes the top spot for the second week in a row. It's safe, it's sweet, so kids are packing the theatres under the blessing of their parents.
The movie taking up residence in slot #2 is about as opposite of High School Musical as you can get: Zack and Miri Make a Porno. I've read a few reviews and seen a few previews, so I've got a bit of a handle on what this one is about. Best friends Zack and Miri are housemates who can't pay the bills. While brainstorming ways to cure their financial woes, they experience a breakthrough: "Let's make a porno on a shoestring budget, and if it becomes a cult classic, we'll be rolling in the dough!" You might think the concept of the film is disgusting. Isn't there a better road for Zack and Miri to take? Sure! But most movie studios aren't chomping at the bit to make Zack and Miri Go to Financial Peace University.
As for the rest, we only had two other newbies: The Haunting of Molly Hartley joined Saw V to create a potent duo for the Halloween weekend. Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood is back with The Changeling. As with most Eastwood films, this one might show up at awards time. (And as with most Eastwood films, this one is probably really, really tragic.) I see that the folks at CT Movies liked it. They especially appreciated John Malkovich's performance as a local minister who helps the protagonist in her journey to find justice. They write: "Malkovich as a feisty minister who is completely in touch with the problems in his wider community, is a refreshing and inspiring kind of preacher to see on the big screen."
Top Five Books (according to USA Today research)
1. Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer
2. New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer
3. The Shack, by William P. Young
4. Eclipse, by Stephenie Meyer
5. The Gate House, by Nelson DeMille
Notables: For the last few weeks, the top five list has featured three books from Meyer, The Shack, and one fresh release. This week's fresh release is a thriller called The Gate House.
There's just not all that much to talk about here. However, the conversation about preaching to the vampire-obsessed really heated up last week. I was thrilled with some of the thoughts folks shared. Feel free to still jump in and offer your two cents.
Top Five Albums
1. Black Ice, AC/DC
2. Funhouse, Pink
3. High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Soundtrack
4. Evolver, John Legend
5. That Don't Make Me a Bad Guy, Toby Keith
Notables: AC/DC takes the top spot for another week, and the soundtrack from High School Musical 3 came back for another round (though it slipped one spot). The rest are new to the list but don't demand too much attention. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Pink's album probably saw a great debut because of the single "So What." Make your way through the last few roundups to see my thoughts on that song and others like it. John Legend is smooooooooth. People love the guy; people will buy whatever the guy puts out. And then there's Toby Keith. He tends to be a bit political, so it's no surprise he released a new one around Election Day. Remember his song "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)"? It was written after 9-11 and contained such gems as: "Soon as we could see clearly through our big black eye, Man we lit up your world like the Fourth of July." Yeah - I'd say he can get a little political. Nonetheless, from what I can tell, his new album is way mellow. Maybe he's not as angry an American as in the past.
Top Singles
1. "Live Your Life," T.I. (featuring Rihanna)
2. "Whatever You Like," T.I.
3. "So What," Pink
4. "Hot N Cold," Katy Perry
5. "If I Were a Boy," Beyonce
Notables: Pretty much all the same songs as last week. Katy Perry has popped up again, but that's no real surprise.
Top Five Web Searches (according to Google Trends)
*Exercise caution when searching; some topics may be inappropriate.
1. king of bhutan
2. hank baskett pics
3. asher roth
4. spock
5. brandon roy
Notables: There's a new king in the isolated Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. In fact, they just had their first democratic election to select the new leader.
Hank Baskett is an NFL player (Philadelphia Eagles, to be exact) who recently got engaged to one of Hugh Hefner's ex-girlfriends. Congratulations?
Asher Roth is a rapper who is often compared to Eminem. Not much to look into here, though it is true that Eminem is about to release a new album. You can bet it will be huge, so you can bet we'll be mentioning it in the roundup at some point.
Spock is?well?Spock. Why is he suddenly a top search item? Perhaps it's because of the new Star Trek movie that's coming out. Or maybe it's because a group of folks recently said they have found Spock's home planet. Seriously.
And finally, Brandon Roy. He's an NBA player (Portland Trailblazers, to be exact). He hit a game-winning three-point shot last night.
