A look at what people are watching, reading, listening to, and learning about…
Top Five Movies (according to box office returns)
1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (PG)
2. The Informant! (R)
3. Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself (R) (PG-13)
4. Love Happens (PG-13)
5. Jennifer's Body (R)
Notables: I can't say that anything on this list grabs me. But I can't help but feel like I need to give you a little "cinematic something" to think about. If you're looking for solid reviews of any of these films (and many more that are currently out in theatres), be sure to visit CT Movies.
Also on CT Movies: I appreciated the wrap-up of the Toronto Film Festival that Kenneth Morefield provided. Some of the movies sound quite intriguing (while others sound like they walk a fine line between intriguing and troubling). Speaking of Toronto, a new film about Charles Darwin (interestingly entitled Creation) has quite a buzz about it—and Roger Ebert sure raised the buzz level with an incisive editorial about some audience members who walked out on a viewing of the film. Creation almost didn't get a U.S. distributor because of its divisive nature, but now it looks like it's full steam ahead for a U.S. release. Probably something worth keeping an eye on…
Top Five Books (according to USA Today research)
1. The Lost Symbol, by Dan Brown
2. True Compass, by Ted Kennedy
3. The Last Song, by Nicholas Sparks
4. New Moon, by Stephenie Meyer
5. Eclipse, by Stephenie Meyer
Notables: It's safe to assume that Dan Brown is going to be king of the literary hill for a little while. Meyer might knock him off his perch when the movie version of New Moon comes along, but Brown is going to own this list for quite some time.
If the name "Dan Brown" is ringing a bell, it's because he's the dude who wrote a little book entitled The Da Vinci Code. That little book was made into a blockbuster movie of the same name, starring Tom Hanks and one very awful hairdo.
Anyway, his newest book takes swipes at the Masons. I don't know if there's much to pursue in this one. Sounds like Brown is being typical Brown. If you're looking for a general overview of the book, check out this review from Time magazine's Lev Grossman. I also thought this review from The New Yorker had a few interesting thoughts on Dan Brown's body of work and why so many are drawn to it. Pay attention to the last few paragraphs.
Top Five Albums (according to Billboard)
1. The Blueprint 3, Jay-Z
2. I Look to You, Whitney Houston
3. The Resistance, Muse
4. Man on the Moon: The End of Day, Kid Cudi
5. Time of Our Lives, Miley Cyrus
Notables: Move along.
Top Singles (according to Billboard)
1. "I Gotta Feeling," The Black Eyed Peas
2. "Run This Town," Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Kanye West
3. "Down," Jay Sean (featuring Lil' Wayne)
4. "You Belong with Me," Taylor Swift
5. "Empire State of Mind," Jay-Z and Alicia Keys
Notables: Move along.
Top Five Web Searches (based on the Google Trends report for Thursday)
*Exercise caution when searching; some topics may be inappropriate.
1. thamail morgan
2. george o malley grey s anatomy
3. ruth bader ginsburg
4. seviche
5. railroad daisy
Notables: Thamail Morgan is a young football player. He’s best known for a rules violation that may cost him a college (and pro) career. But if Google Trends is any indication, maybe he’ll be best known for something he did at a recent game. Pretty classy move.
George O'Malley is the name of a fictional surgeon on ABC’s Grey's Anatomy. He had a rough Thursday night. I’m guessing most of this blog’s audience doesn’t watch Grey’s Anatomy, but I’ll play nice and not share the info I stumbled on this morning.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is in the hospital. She has recently been battling pancreatic cancer.
As best I can tell, item #4 is also Grey’s Anatomy-related. I guess a character mentioned ceviche (also spelled “seviche” or even “cebiche”), and I guess no one knew that ceviche is a seafood dish.
I have no idea what item #5 is all about.
